I just wanted to share my personal, negative experience with Northtown Auto Clinic. After purchasing an older Volvo, I noticed it had a few oil leaks. I had a general tune up performed from another independent shop, who recommended Northtown Auto Clinic as a local shop that had a reputation for repairing these cars throughout the years. After calling and speaking with Erin on the phone, she confirmed they could handle working on its turbo 5 cylinder engine and to go ahead and bring it in for an initial diag. She called after I had dropped it off and told me they had found 4 separate locations that were leaking oil and told me the amount, which I authorized to pay for ($1,800). One week later, my car was finished. They assured me that all leaks were fixed. I happened to check under the car several hours later in my garage to find a pool of fresh oil on the floor. It was leaking from the cam cover which was an area I paid them to fix. They honored their warranty and took it back in the next day, only to give it back to me still leaking and now with the engine out of timing from replacing the exhaust cam seal and timing belt incorrectly. They have attempted to fix this particular cover 5 times total now. The third time calling me saying they test drove it and verified it was dry and ready for pick up. Only for me to pop the hood in their lot and notice oil all over the top and beneath the engine. They took the car back in and resealed the cover a fourth time, for me to notice it puking all over the place the next day. Their excuse the fourth time was that their supplier gave them the wrong chemical gasket sealant. I did my own research and spoke with the local Volvo dealership, and they gave me the part number for the appropriate anaerobic sealant for this application. I notified Northtown about what should be used to seal the cam cover, and they still decided to use another product. The craftsmanship is terrible. You can see thick, black sealant unevenly oozing out of the joint. The certified Volvo tech literally laughed when he pointed it out me in their shop. After the fifth time of attempting to get the cam cover to seal, I noticed oil once again, coating the underneath of the engine just days later. I dropped it off expecting the cycle to continue. Brett says it’s a completely unrelated issue this time. This comes after being assured the engine was sealed properly and that my engine shows no signs of excessive crankcase pressure. I find it hard to believe a severe leak sprung up all of a sudden and will be getting a second opinion. One thing is for sure, they will never receive my business again. I hardly received a sorry for the inconvenience and incompetence I’ve received time and time again from this shop. They do offer loaner vehicles and they do allow you to exercise the 36,000 mile warranty they offer with repairs, but I have no confidence in their ability or expertise. Be advised if you do receive a complementary loaner from them, head to the gas station immediately. Each time I received one either the gas light was on, or very close. I’m not in the business of slander. I will say the staff does appear to be friendly and not argumentative. I just feel my experience warrants a warning for anyone considering this shop. The quality of their work is subpar and not worth the headache.
